Objectives

  • To develop a comprehensive and harmonised database for Central Siberia on forest extent and characteristics relevant to the assessment of carbon emissions;
  • To develop automatic methods for large-scale forest disturbance estimates using multisensor Earth Observation data in boreal forests with focus on fire and logging;
  • To generate the currently best possible and accurate multi-annual database on forest disturbances and corresponding carbon fluxes in Central Siberia;
  • To develop GIS tools to estimate disturbance-induced carbon emissions based on assimilation of EO data derived products into appropriate contemporary greenhouse gas models;
  • To estimate the human impact on forest disturbances and carbon fluxes in Central Siberia through the analysis of the multi-layer and multi-temporal database;
  • To ensure accessibility for public organisations and the scientific community to the data on forest disturbances and the corresponding carbon fluxes for Central Siberia using internet technology such as Web-GIS.
